Until the pandemic shut us down, the Dublin Community Church had an active and enthusiastic choir that sang at all our services, plus occasional weddings and funerals. We had a weekly Sunday morning turnout of eight to 16 singers. Our repertoire included classical works, popular songs, show tunes of a religious nature (from such works as Godspell and Jesus Christ Superstar) and many original songs composed by our choir director, Tom Martin. The Sunday before Christmas was devoted to a full-length program of anthems and carols to accompany readings from the Bethlehem story. We also prepared ambitious classical pieces for Easter Sunday.
We normally rehearsed every Thursday night from 6:30 to 8:00 p.m. Everyone was welcome to join us – sight-reading was helpful, but not required. Laughter was mandatory.
Most of our members are over 65. Sadly, experts have determined that choral singing is one of the best ways to spread COVID-19, so our choir has not performed in church since the middle of March, 2020. We look forward to the day we can again stand shoulder to shoulder and make music together.
